How to Draw a Bell Pepper Step by Step

This tutorial shows how to draw a bell pepper in four steps with simple line drawing and coloring examples.

The primary example is of a common red bell pepper. You can see a preview of the drawing steps for it in the image above. There are also some additional examples of different color variations that you can use at the end of the tutorial.

Start the drawing in pencil with light lines that you can easily erase. You may also want to have a thin black marker or a black pen handy to trace over them before coloring.

Step 1 – Draw the Middle Section of the Bell Pepper

Begin by drawing the middle section of the bell pepper. Make it narrower towards the tip and wider toward the back/stem. Try and outline it with fairly smooth curves as shown in the example.

Step 2 – Add the Side Sections

Add the other two visible sections of the pepper (one on each side of the middle section). Again, make them slightly narrower towards the tip. Also, try and draw each one to be somewhat similar in shape to the other. This is not necessary but generally a more symmetrical shape tends to look nicer.

Step 3 – Add the Stem & Finish the Line Drawing

Coming out of the back of the pepper add the stem. Make it wider towards it’s base, narrower in the middle and then again wider with what looks like a little cap on the very end.

Once done drawing the stem make sure that your are happy with the way the pepper looks and trace over your lines with a black pen or marker. If you don’t have one around you can just darken them with the pencil.

Step 4 – Color the Bell Pepper

You can color the pepper using any media you like such as paints, colored pencils or markers. When coloring leave a few white spots (reflections) in each of its sections to show that the pepper has a smooth and reflective surface. To help yourself not accidentally color over them you can very lightly outline these areas in either a regular pencil or in whatever color you wish to make the bell pepper.

Make the stem a yellow/green. Common colors for the pepper itself are red, green or yellow/orange. You can see the example of the red pepper above.

Once you color the pepper itself you can also optionally very lightly go over with the reflections with the same color (so that they don’t look overly bright).

As mentioned green is a common color for a bell pepper. If this is the color you chose try and make the green of the pepper darker than the color of the stem (similar to what’s shown above).

You can also make the pepper a yellow/orange as shown in this last example.
