How to Draw an Apple in 6 Easy Steps
This easy step by step tutorial shows how to draw an apple. It features very simple illustrated examples and quick instructions.

The type of apple shown as the example in this tutorial is a green apple that is also known as “Granny Smith”. These kinds of apples tend to be characterized by their bright green color. The drawing is done in a somewhat simplified way to make the guide beginner friendly. The examples first show how to create an outline of the apple itself and than how to add a stem and a leaf. The final step of the tutorial shows an easy and effective way to apply some color.
It’s recommended that you start the drawing in pencil and make light lines in case you make a mistake. You can darken them later on (before coloring) with a black pen or marker.
Step 1 – Draw the First Half of the Apple

Begin by drawing one half of the apple. Make it a little wider near the top and narrower near the bottom.

You may also wish to draw a straight vertical line to act as a guide that can later help you see if both halves of the apple are close in width. You can draw this very light in pencil and erase it later on.
Step 2 – Finish the Apple’s Outline

Add the second half of the apple onto the first one to complete it’s basic outline.
Be sure that the apple’s outline has a bit of an upwards curve at the bottom and a slight downwards curve on the top (where the stem grows out of).

Try and make the second half as close to the first one in shape as you can. The apple does not need to be perfectly symmetrical but the drawing will look nicer if the two halves are similar.
Step 3 – Draw the Stem

Coming out of the top/middle of the apple add the stem. Draw it curved towards one side and bake it slightly thinner towards the bottom and wider towards the top. Overall it should be fairly small and thin compared to the actual apple itself.
Step 4 – Draw the Leaf

When drawing the leaf first outline it’s main shape. Make it wider in the middle and narrower towards either end (with a pointy tip).

Next draw the stalk that turns into the midrib (large vein that runs through the middle of the leaf). Make this part wider at the base and thinner as it goes out towards the end of the leaf. You can outline it with two curved lines that eventually join together at the tip.
Step 5 – Draw the Leaf Veins & Finish the Line Drawing

For the last set of details add the smaller veins that run along each side of the leaf. Draw these going from the midrib towards the outer edges (but not touching them) in smooth curves. Try and the veins in a way where they are not perfectly aligned with their counterparts on the other side of the midrib. This will make the leaf look more natural.
When done adding this last set of details you can look over your drawing to see if it needs any final adjustments. Once you feel that things look good you can go ahead and trace over it with a black pen/marker or just darken your lines with a pencil.
Step 6 – Color the Apple

Color the apple green, the leaf a dark green and the stem brown. To make the apple look shiny leave a small white spot on one of it’s sides. This will show light reflecting from it’s smooth surface.
Colored pencils, paints and markers can all be good and easy coloring options. You can even mix a few of them together. For example you can use a marker for the bright red of the apple and a green pencil for the leaf.
Once done with this step you should be finished with the drawing.
Conclusion
This tutorial shows a simple way to draw a green “Granny Smith” apple using a step by step approach. By taking it’s most defining characteristics you can make the apple easily recognizable without needing to do a more detailed and complex drawing. Hopefully you’ve found the instructions and examples helpful and easy to follow.
